THIN CLOUDS

2-08-18

High thin clouds shrouded a bit of the Sun’s rays today making the light just not quite the High Definition of yesterday. Still, there was plenty of details to be found out in Mineral Basin as well as some amazing corduroy carpets that let you explore your inner Ligety. Those lines off on those Lewis and Clarke explorations let you dial in what ever arc you wanted with perfect accuracy turn for turn. Nice!! Here is a close up shot of the Hydro Velvet, un trammeled with the Sun back lighting the nap!! It may get deeper, but it does not get better! On the front of the hill, the morning session was a bit dark as the reflected light from across the Canyon was not as illuminating as it was yesterday, but the smooth carpets made up for any lack of detail, and the lower elevations had that whirring and zizzing sound coming off of each turn. The off trail was offering still soft lines on some of the High North aspects, but a high frequency rumble is becoming ubiquitous, however, there are lines well worth the effort to access. Here is a shot of Team Z, who read the site everyday and were stoked on the low traffic, big vertical, and non stop top to bottom runs. Tomorrow, look for more ground pounding fun from the word go. Mineral Basin will be offering the bright Sun lit lines that are totally untracked for the early risers. Temps. should be moderate again, but I had to keep my hat on all day today, and I am betting on the same tomorrow. While interference patterns are building on the high traffic areas, other lines are becoming more smooth as traffic polishes the high density pack from a few days ago. Those smooth lines are out there, and are worth keeping a sharp eye out. As a parting shot, here is Neil’s shot of Mineral Basin from the Landing yesterday with the High Definition visibility. Dial it up, and dial it in!!

HIGH DEFINITION

2-07-18

The air was cold and clear as crystal, the Sun was shining, and the sky was ultra blue making for a high definition day. As anticipated, the Groomers were amazing on all sides of the hill, but the wind deposited goodness that covered the carpets in Mineral Basin were made for full edge articulation. The off trail was offering some very nice lines on some of the North Facing aspects that had folks working those lines early. The Road to Provo opened after being closed yesterday, and I took advantage of the lines I was working two days ago to find untracked goodness right where I left it. Later in the afternoon, the Sun became obscured by a cloud that built up over the peak, making the light go flat. The quality remained good all day as the temps. kept the product refrigerated and soft. Here is a great shot of The Boston Boys, who were all charged up and fully amped to hit the steepest lines on the hill. They read this site every day and were working the hill with the info. Tomorrow, look for another day of fun in the Sun. Temps will be cold again in the AM, so dress for it, but be ready to shed layers as the day warms up. The Groomers will be offering the smooth Hydro Velvet carpets that let you explore your inner Ligety. Even my friends on snowboards were getting super laid over and loving it. The off trail will continue to be soft and is becoming more consistent with traffic. There are extensive interference patterns on the high traffic areas, but there is plenty of big mountain smooth to be found with a bit of looking. The traverses are improving and are becoming much more approachable as well, just use caution. Get ready for some ground pounding fun. Syrup Won’t Stop ‘EM!!

LIGHT FLURRIES

2-06-18

A few inches of fresh Essence covered the hill this morning, making the Groomers off the chart amazing. The Morning Crew retraced yesterday’s opening run to replay the sumptuous runs of yesterday. Visibility was marginal once again, but the smooth lines were happening, though some of those low angle lines had been worked a bit and had a touch of rumble to deal with, but it was no problem. On the Front of the hill, there were fresh lines to find, and if you were a bit ambitious you could find some untracked lines well into the afternoon. What a treat it was to have low traffic and light flurries keeping the day fresh and fun. Here is a shot of a bit of a break in the clouds looking down the Canyon. It was great fun to explore a bit further afield with all the recent snow, and I was able to dial in lines I had not skied all season. While on one of my more obscure line approaches I came across this pealing section that was throwing over a shallow reef. I was lucky to be able to duck dive and not get sucked over the falls. Tomorrow, look for a return of the Sun as the storm moves off. The Groomers will be offering stellar Hydro Velvet and the off trail is offering very nice lines that will be easy to spot with the added definition. It might be a tad cold in the AM, so dress up and be comfortable. Traffic should remain light and the morning runs will be vacant for the early risers. There are folks who thought this ripper could be sidelined, let it be known for those who doubt, Jimmy Whack is BACK!! Straight Ahead!!

OVERNIGHT SENSATION

2-05-18

An overnight sensation of high density grauple covered the dance floor, only cleared off by the wind on the high points. Aiming for the bright white threads offered amazing quality that rivals any of the best of the season. In Mineral Basin, though the visibility was marginal, the low angle aspects were holding as much as 8″ of buoyant chiffon feeling Essence. With the visibility so tricky, no one could get an eye on the lines, so those sections I was working stayed untracked for many laps. On the front of the hill, the Peruvian Gulch was offering great lines as well, and the high density of the product cushioned the ride and made some of the rumble of previous days almost forgotten. Later in the day, the Road to Provo opened, and I was able to ski a line I have avoided all season, finding beautiful wind blown goodness filling the low guts. I had to make numerous laps there as well to make up for lost time. Here is a shot of Team Love’s Park IL., who are newly weds experiencing their first Tram ride on their first Day at the Bird. They were on first Tram, which is a great start to a long life together. Later in the day, breaks in the clouds let the visibility improve and I got this shot of the Twins which had just appeared. Tomorrow, look for another cool day, some light overnight accumulation, and amazing Groomers wall to wall. The off trail will still be offering some great lines, as the hill never really got totally worked over. Look for those overlooked or unseen lines that are still waiting for the Cosmic Touch. Conditions have markedly improved and with any more accumulation will be just that much better. IBBY!!

GAME DAY

2-04-18

Traffic was light on this game day, with very difficult visibility on the upper elevations. The Cat Crew did put an extra dose of love into the mat, providing some very nice corduroy top to bottom. Out in Mineral Basin, a contingent of the Morning Crew found a wind buffed surface covering the fresh till, but the visibility back there was challenging as well. There was a rime ice event adding to the visibility issues, however, sticking with the known smooth lines helped keep the ride mellow while I scraped my goggles while underway. On the bottom of the hill, the corduroy had a very soft and silky feel, and shaving off the nap was a treat that had me dialing it back to extract goodness from each turn. With no opportunities to get a good shot of the day, I offer another piece of the art I have been working on. Tomorrow, look for some accumulation from a quick impulse that passed during the game. I will be looking for those Groomers for the smoothest ride. I did do a bit of exploring today, and found some wind lines that are out of the way and have avoided any traffic to speak of. Look for continued unsettled weather, so dress for the occasion. Visibility could be a factor once again, so stick with the trees for the best reflected light and reference points. See you there for the morning explorations. Don’t Forget To SIZZLE!!

SUNNY MORNING

2-03-18

With a cloudy day forecast, it was a treat to see a Sunny Morning instead of flat light. The Groomers were offering the good lines of Hydro Velvet for the early risers. That small accumulation of yesterday’s precipitation seemed to add a bit of luxury to the mat, as that high density product helped cushion the ride. Off trail there are some hidden lines that are hidden out and about, and looking for wind lines is still worth the time. Even if you get skunked, like I did the other day, the adventure is fun. Those in search of moments can also pay off big at times. Here is a shot of the Snowbird Subaru set up on the deck. It is a very cool looking Winter worthy ride. Tomorrow, look for more great machine worked carpets on all sides of the hill. We will have to see how the visibility shakes out, but I am betting on good morning session. I will be looking for those wind lines again, and will report on my findings. The complexion of the hill can change in one hour, so anything can happen overnight. I will be back on the hill in the AM. and will have a first hand report for the post. See you there dark and early. Speed Safely!

RIME EVENT

2-02-18

Clouds hung on the peak, and the wind was blowing strong as a brush by was moving through. The precipitation was a rime ice event that stuck to the goggles and needed to be scraped periodically. I went looking for those wind lines that I thought would be there in very compromised visibility , and was handed a big NEGATORY!! The Groomers, on the other hand were smooth and consistent with pockets of wind deposited dust that was becoming more luxurious as the rime event continued. The carve traction was amazing and let you explore your inner Ligety. The front side of the hill offered great lines as well and the low traffic made max vertical good to go. Here is a shot of Team OZ, who are visiting from Australia and are avid readers of the site. It was great fun meeting them and sharing the stoke of a really fun day on the hill. Tomorrow, look for a storm day with precipitation, so dress for weather and cold temps. I was on the borderline today with just a shell. Wind lines did not really materialize and I don’t expect there to be much in the way of transport overnight. Keep an eye out just in case. I will be taking the day off to catch up with chores here at The Trailer. Aw Reety Aw Righty!!

SHORT WINDOW

2-01-18

It was Sunny for the first couple of hours this morning, providing a short window of high definition visibility to start out the day. Though the temps seemed mild, a stout North wind brought the wind chill factor in full effect. I dressed for the occasion after scoping out the data sheet in the foyer, and that saved me from a very harsh reality. Powder Paradise and the Lewis and Clark explorations offered carpets that were being buffed by the wind and seasoned with transported snow that made them amazing and fully dialable. Here is a shot of Elise extracting as much juice from the wind deposited lines as humanly possible. If it can’t be powder, it might as well be another form of perfect! While the Morning Crew was out in the far reaches, we saw these interesting cloud formations that seemed to be offering private messages in the sky. Perhaps, they are saying ” All is Well!” and snow is on the way. We shall see. ” A cloud deck moved in during the afternoon session, flattening the light and making the details a bit hard to discern, but the smooth lines were consistent and trustworthy top to bottom. Light traffic made back to back Trams easy to make and you could rack up the vertical in short order. Tomorrow, look for clouds to shroud the Sun, great Grooming on all sides of the hill, and some wind lines filling up. I will be looking for some interesting prospects in Mineral Basin for the smoothest off trail wind lines. Traffic should continue to be light and the runs should be very sparsely traveled. See you there for the search for wind buffed natural smoothing. Dial it up, and dial it in!!
