WIDE OPEN

1-11-22

The hill was wide open today, with smooth cruisers letting you stretch out and dial up some serious juice. Mineral Basin was offering bright Sun, carpets of AHHHHH and very little traffic to pack in as much vertical as possible. I finally felt like I was making the turns I know I can make. On the front side of the hill, lots of great lines were to be had, too, with very little traffic and very fast access for the return for more vertical.

Hellgate sporting a couple of very interesting lines that beg the question, where did they go when they ran out of road??

Temps were amazingly warm, but the pack remained nicely refrigerated and did not begin to morph. Dry chalky lines stayed smooth all day and very little chatter built up. Tomorrow, look for more bright Sun, fast ripping lines on all sides of the hill. Follow the Sun for the best illumination, and enjoy the smoothness and dialability that is happening now. These are some very special days indeed. Feet don’t fail me now!!!

SUNNY CRUISIN’

1-10-22

With warm temps at high elevations, bright Sun shining in a clear sky, and wide open groomers, it was a perfect day of Sunny Cruisin’. Mineral Basin was wide open and the Groomers were dry, chalky, and very consistent. I did a few Baldy Chairs to take advantage of the empty lines and delightful corduroy that was going off there. There were a couple of Snow Guns building up the base and they were depositing wonderful Gun Powder way down the slope. I had to dial it back a bit to get more out of each turn.

A big Cat sleeping on the peak right next to The Summit. These are such fantastic machines.

The front of the hill was offering dry chalky lines as well and when the Sun rose up higher, it illuminated the Dance Floor and the full on rock and roll was happening. Breakfast at The Forklift was a treat with a full crew and lots of laughs.

Neil ordered these eggs for breakfast and you may ask, why only 4 Jalapinos? Because 5 is too many and 3 is not enough!!

Tomorrow, look for more inversion warmth up on the hill. The Groomers will be offering the smoothest lines, however, the High North is still holding the dry cold smooth as the traffic has been light. I will be looking for more sunny empty lines first thing in Mineral Basin. See you there dark and early for the wide open carpets of AHHHH!!! Don’t touch that dial!!!

FIRST MINERAL

1-09-22

It was clear and cold this morning as I made my way into Mineral Basin for the first time this season. The main areas had been worked over fairly well, so I stayed with the prepared lines that were smooth, however, the pack was a tad punchy and I did not dare to stick the edge in the turns so as not to punch through the mat. I did a first Lewis and Clark lap to get a look at the expanse.

A look at the Basin from the top of the Baldy Chair. Great cover top to bottom.

The groomers off the Baldy Chair were a bit more consistent and I was able to lock and load the turns. The crowd was making it’s way into the Basin, So I worked The Peruvian Gulch to take advantage of the vacant lines that were waiting there. Tomorrow, look for more smooth cruising on the prepared lines. Mineral Basin will be offering the Sun and full illumination for the morning session. I expect a bit less traffic with start of the week and wide open prepared lines all day. The off trail is a bit stiff and bouncy, so keep that in mind. I think it will be cold once again, so I will be dressing for the occasion from the start. Stay Frosty!!!

SURFACE SMOOTHING

1-08-22

A few more inches of high density sugar and still high winds at the upper elevations, delivered a mountain wide surface smoothing of the hill. There were big smooth lines everywhere, with Mineral Basin offering some amazing sections that were perfect top to bottom. The wind was still a big factor and it kept the surfaces smooth and refilling on many lines on the hill.

Big winds kept the new snow moving, providing smooth lines everywhere.

Traffic was fairly heavy and the line in Mineral Basin was stout, but moving quickly. Tomorrow, look for more great lines on the hill and warmer temps. We’ll have to see if the wind still holds up, but I will be looking for more wind buffed lines to start out the day. I am going to dress for the wind and a wind chill factor. The hill is looking great and I am looking forward to some big lines and smooth surfaces. IBBY!!!

WARMING UP

1-07-22

Temps were much warmer this morning as South winds were blowing briskly up high. A bit of staggered start saw Zoom open with Gad 2 offered for the opening lines. The Peruvian Chair opened around 10 AM, offering soft carvey lines in the high density product that felt luxurious underfoot. Mineral Basin opened as well and it too offered some very nice smooth lines that were very consistent that kept you on the surface for the most part.

Smooth lines on Superior

There was a large turn out of The Faithful who were stoked to get some of the fresh lines that were waiting in the wings. Tomorrow, look for some overnight accumulation as a cold front is moving through. No telling how much it may bring, but expect some freshened lines over the hill. The lines on the hill remain quite smooth overall as it has not had that much traffic in the past few days, so look for some nice lines all over the hill. I’ll be taking the day off tomorrow, so dial in some righteous turns for me. Dial it up, Dial it in!!!

STORM FALLOUT

1-06-22

After quite a cycle, the storm fall out is becoming evident with difficult visibility, rime ice on the upper mountain, and some limited access on the hill. Still, the conditions are very good with creamy and smooth medium density product covering the hill.

Heavy flocking on the trees illustrated the clingy nature of the recent snow fall.

Tomorrow, look for early morning Canyon restrictions as they mitigate the slide issues. Hopefully there won’t be any issues. I think we will get some visibility on the hill and get a look at things. I am looking forward to some smooth big lines that have been filling up when some of the sections open up. With all this snow and no traffic, those big lines should be fat and epic. What a great cycle it has been, and excitement is high all around. See you there for the morning session. Remain Standing!!!

STORM RUNNIN’

1-05-22

The rain was pelting the skin of The Trailer this morning and did not let up all day long, signaling a full on day of storm runnin’ up on the hill. The wind was up and the Tram was down as well as the Peruvian side of the hill, and the precipitation was coming fast and hard, building up a fairly dense pack that was spreadably smooth. Looking far afield was the ticket to getting the smooth lines, and staying lower down on the hill kept you out of the meat of the wind. Visibility was difficult at best, but staying close to the trees made reference points easier to keep things in focus. Traffic was very light and it was a free for all on the open lines.

Tramrat has made his seasonal excursion down to Tuscon AZ to enjoy the warmth and let the hill pile up. Here is a shot he sent to give him a tip of the Goggles on the fairway.

Tomorrow, look for a fair bit more accumulation to have been added overnight and, perhaps, at bit lighter storm intensity. I think we can expect a slow start, so no need to go rushing first thing in the AM. The hill should be very smooth with all the new product and it should be spreadably smooth once again. See you there for the shred fest. See The Line, BE the Line!!

INCOMING STORM

1-04-22

High winds up at the upper elevations signaled an incoming storm cycle that is now impacting The Front. The temps were much warmer this morning with the Westerly flow, however, the wind made the chair rides a bit nippy. With the high wind, the Tram was down for the day. Mineral Basin opened this morning, first thing, for the first time of the season accessed by The Tunnel

First trip through the Tunnel this season led to Mineral Basin.

While the prepared lines were dry, chalky, and very grippy, the off trail lines were very wind slabbed out with no real variation due to aspect. Even a trip out to the Bookends found no relief from the breakable layer and beating a hasty retreat back to the prepared lines was called for. Visibility back there was marginal at best and it made for a short day for me. Tomorrow, look for a full on storm riding day, with much colder temps, wind still a factor, and fresh Essence piling up fast. Coverage is excellent and some of the wind buffed lines are really fun. I scoped out my lines for the upcoming accumulation. This should prove to be a very good cycle for the hill and will cover a lot of some of the thinner sections. Speed Safely!!!

HIGH CLOUDS

1-03-22

The temps were still quite cold this morning with a high cloud deck that was filtering the Sun until it thickened later in the day making the light go flat. The Groomers were dry chalky and smooth top to bottom and the coverage is amazing. Off trail, the pack is thickening up and getting a tad stiff, but the lines are still holding up smooth for the most part.

There is still a fresh track or two to find if you know where to look.

Tomorrow, look for slightly warmer temps, however, the clouds have moved in ahead of the next storm system that is poised to bring significant accumulation over the next few days. The precipitation may hold off for the morning hours before some flurries in the afternoon. I will be dressing for the cold and sticking with the prepared lines to take advantage of the fresh carpets of AHHHH. We are in a great snow cycle, which is really putting the hill in amazing condition to be able to dial in all your favorite lines. Stay Frosty!!

BLUE BIRD

1-02-22

It was a clear and cold blue bird day, with dry chalky powder on the prepared lines, and stiff cold lines on the off trail sections. The Road to Provo opened for the opening bell offering a range of consistency with some wind affected and dense sections that kept you on your toes. The temps were very cold and that made the snow quite slow.

Mikey M getting in deep and blasted out on West Baldy this morning.

While a lot of folks showed up for the day, the lines on the lifts moved quickly and it was pretty much ski on and quick access up the hill. The Groomers were deluxe, with perfect traction after all the accumulation of the past days. That was a very nice treat.

Dr. T getting some fresh lines off the Eddy Mo traverse today.

Conditions are fantastic wall to wall and you can find lots of soft snow and still open lines if you use your eyes and go a bit off the beaten path. Tomorrow, look for another still cold morning with great conditions, and I expect the traffic to be even lighter. The off trail is still offering nice soft lines, but the cold is setting up the pack a bit. Interference patterns are beginning to build, but still there is smooth runnings over most of the open areas. See you there for the morning fun. IBBY!!!
