SEASON REFLECTIONS

6-10-18

After returning from a long cycle around the Galactic Core, I made it back through the Portal, which did not seem to interest Snoopy and Prickly Pete, who just kind of looked up and said ” Ho Hum”. I tried to tell them about the perilous transit of the Quantum Rift that made for some serious turbulence. Here is a shot of the Plasma fields just before entering the Zone. This sojourn gave me the space to get a bit better perspective on the Season. Admittedly, the Season began with that early snow that was an ominous sign, but the hill opened after a short delay. The Snow Makers and Grooming Crew did a great job keeping the available terrain covered. When the snow began to fall, the Faithful were hot after it, and there was a lot of excitement as the hill began to fill in. Between storms, the prepared lines were consistently fun and fast, and by the time the entire hill was good to go, it was full on all over the hill. Mineral Basin was really the highlight for me during those morning sessions, with low traffic and ground pounding lines made the first part of the season seem a mere footnote. Here is a shot of the corduroy goodness that made the conditions so sweet and silky. During the snow cycles, the push was for the opening of the bowls, but many of the sleeper days were unattended and offered free refills, which were key points in making those memorable days for me. Here is a shot that Tim Burdick took of me out off the Road To Provo, which was also one of the memorable days of the season. Now, many folks will say that this was a bad season, and I understand that perception. I arrived here in ’76 ’77, when it was also a difficult start, but now we have the snow making and grooming power that was lacking in those days. So, in light of that, and the fact that we did recieve 400” this season, anywhere else that would have been a banner year, and it was. As I look back, the season was filled with great days, with so many great friends sharing the stoke. The corn cycle during the last month was some of the most exquisite corn skiing of memory. We used to have to hike for the terrain that offered that kind of quality, and Mineral Basin, now lift serviced, was just a dream. I want to thank ALL the folks that make The Bird turn every day. The Patrol, Snow Makers, Grooming Crew, and Lift Crews made it happen every day. I also want to thank the Forklift Crew for being so hospitable to The Morning Crew, who would roll in every morning. I will be taking The Trailer to the High Desert to commence the unprotected descents down the Rabbit Hole, as I challenge myself to some Extreme Knowledge Acquisition. One never knows what one will find, but I ain’t afraid to find out. Always remember and never forget, Syrup Won’t Stop ‘EM!!!
