SUNNY MORNING

3-21-23

It was a cold Sunny Morning, offering a great accumulation of fresh Essence, and possibilities wall to wall. New fresh lines opened that were just deluxe with easy as pie light density quality. The substrate was variable from place to place, with many really smooth sections right there.

Mikey M power blasting the goods this morning on Baldy!
Mark Herath working with the changes at The Alter. Smooth substrate!!!

Lewis and Clark was offering amazing low angle lines that were just sweet, but there were also stellar rarities.

Kyle Weston sent this shot of his line down Gheen Gully. Perfectly smooth.

Tomorrow, look for more weather to be in the mix. We’ll have to see how it shakes out. The hill is in great shape, with fairly smooth lines overall. The delivery continues and it is good to go wall to wall. Great times to have this much snow. Straight Ahead.

STORM FRONT

3-20-23

There was plenty of fresh Essence priming the dance floor for today’s festivities ahead of the predicted weather. The new product was cold, dry and dense, which covered the old surface, making the ride smooth and consistent. The traffic was noticeably lighter, with variable visibility which let you see much of the details. The real Wall of Voodoo rolled in later around 2PM with a punch that would unleash a really intense event that changed the entire feel of the day. It was Go Time.

Susan Beltz emerging from a full immersion experience on this most auspicious day!!!

Tomorrow, look for another very active day of weather and fresh accumulation. As you can see from the above shot, the complexion of the pack has really smoothed out and these are just epic conditions, which are really quite rare for this time of the season. The pack is sooooo deep, and the snow stations are reaching or have reached maximum measuring depths, so, now, the sky is the limit. The coming week will prove to be over the top, so keep your eye to sky and dream deep dreams of Powder. Take it to the LIMIT!!

SPRING FLING

3-19-23

Another Spring weekend day with bright Sun and high stoke was the perfect set up for a great time on the hill. The Groomers were offering great, firm lines that let you dial it up on all sides of the hill. A high, thing cloud deck partially filtered the full rays of the Sun and kept the pack from going into melt down.

Multi level geometry high lighted by the high Sun angle.

Weather is on the door step and this entire week is predicted to deliver a continual surge of fresh snow to The Front. I hope you soaked up plenty of the Spring feel in the last couple of days, as it is all about to change in a big way. Tomorrow, look for stormage that is just now beginning to move in. There will be an overnight closure of The Canyon, so expect delays in the AM. The hill is in great shape wall to wall, and all this additional accumulation will totally resurface the dance floor. Keep up with The Bird’s side for all the details and updates. I think this cycle could be one for the books, just to keep the theme for the season going. Yikes what a season. Stay Frosty!!!

SPRING TRYIN’

3-18-23

Spring is tryin’ to get rolling, and today’s Sun and blue skies helped get the feeling going. More great grooming had been prepared, and the recent installments have left very nice material to work into the mat. Off trail, the interference patterns continue to get built up, however, there are still many aspects that are holding on to that Winter dry chalky quality that keeps getting smoother with traffic.

Tomi McCarthy dialing in that cold Winter chalk on the upper North facing aspects. She always makes it look so easy.

Great afternoon music was happening on the Plaza, making that Spring feeling continue with music, dancing and Sun soaking making it all come together.

We had a great intel meeting at The Forklift, where great friends joined the festivities and shared the data points from the day’s fun filled lines.

Tomorrow, look for more of the same Spring feel, with nicely reworked Groomers, still available dry chalky lines on the high North aspects, and more music and fun on the Plaza in the afternoon. Shine ON!!!

CLEAR&COLD

3-17-23

It was a clear cold morning today with a temp. of 2 degrees on the Plaza deck and 8 degrees on the peak. The Sun was shining brightly and there was plenty of fresh lines still waiting, some of which opened later in the day. Extra primo smooth grooming efforts had been performed, with this last installment’s high density really setting up to provide super dry chalky surfaces that really made you scratch for the turns, but still afforded enough traction to keep you dialed into the line. Other very obscure openings occurred with no fan fare or crowd awareness.

The Jazzman standing at the top of the Comma Chute which historically is rarely if ever open. He is one of the first of today’s takers.
Another look at the upper section of the Comma Chute. Out of sight out of mind, which would you rather be!! Thank you Professor Tom for sending the shot.

Tomorrow, look for more full on smooth big mountain lines on prepared sections, with the addition of the natural smoothing of the steep high North aspects that have been getting little traffic. Be sure to pay attention to aspect, as even with the cold temps. those direct Sun exposures will have been hit hard by the high Sun angle. Expect some zipper crust in those areas and avoid them. The High North will be holding the cold dry chalky lines, so look there first for consistent quality. It is going to be a big weekend. Be sure to stick around for the music on the Plaza at 2 PM. Dial it up, Dial it in!!!

SUNNY&FRESH

3-16-23

The Faithful were ready and waiting for go time this morning in anticipation of a Sunny and Fresh snow filled day after that last cycle abated. They were not disappointed, as the Essence was cold dry and dense, which let you float effortlessly through the turns. Mineral Basin opened a bit later in the morning, offering a whole expance of possibilities.

Three key members of the legendary Team Sizzle waiting for the bus. I have been skiing with these 3 for 47 years. LtoR Curtis, Dutchy, Chuck!!

While the day was lit with Sun, the air remained below average, which helped keep the snow refrigerated. The Groomers were supper soft and dialable, and there was plenty of top to bottom lines to make you pay attention. Tomorrow, look for more fresh lines that are still waiting in the wings, and more Sun to keep the details vivid.

My good friend John, AKA Leopard Man is watching over us in the great powder land beyond. Never to be forgotten.

Sorry for not posting yesterday as something came up and it could not be avoided. Stay Frosty!!!

BIG WINDS

3-14-23

Big winds were blowing hard ahead of the cold front that is on the doorstep, which will deliver quite a heapin’ helpin’ in the next couple of days. That atmospheric river is aimed right at us, so expect big weather and big accumulation coming up.

Had a great time skiing with my friends who made their way through extreme stormage to be here for the epic days.

The first of the impulse will hit overnight with more on the way for tomorrow as well. The Canyon will close overnight, so check the Bird site for updates of access. Be ready for delays in the AM. The flow continues and the hill is great shape to handle the new installment. Straight Ahead!!!!

FUN CARVING

3-13-23

With a couple inches of fresh Essence covering the hill, and the previous installment providing the cushion, it was a fun day of carving, with full platform engagement happening top to bottom and wall to wall. Mineral Basin opened and it was amazing, with smooth wind blown lines that just did not let up. The Tram line went away and there were walk on Trams by Noon. Visibility was marginal, with the clouds moving in and out all day long.

Classic Summits to the West poked out of the clouds now and again.

The Groomers were offering silky smooth textures that let you dial in your inner Ligety with total unmitigated audacity. As the day progressed and the temps warmed up, the chop began to get a tad stiff. Tomorrow, look for variable visibility again as the flow keep passing through. Expect some light flurries, great prepared lines on all sides of the hill, and amazing conditions with everything filled in and good to go. Be looking at all the lines before they get filled with the next installment coming in during the next couple of days. It is gonna be huge. Remain Standing!!!

CONTINUED FLOW

3-12-23

The flow continued today, with light precip. lots of great lines still available, and more in the forecast. The wind and accumulation have really filled in the the lines on the hill, which were full anyway, but the transport has filled in lines with a lot more goodness to make them straight up epic. The Upper Cirque is looking as fat as I have seen it in years, and with all the wind it is as smooth as can be.

The view South from the top of a Lewis and Clark line, looking clear and magnificent.

Tomorrow, look for more variable visibility as this flow continues and light snow still in the forecast. The Groomers will be offering amazing carpets of AHHHHHH for your carving pleasure. The temps are much milder with this Westerly flow, but I will still be dressing for weather. I will also be looking far afield for those shots that I have held off on, but with all this snow and transported product I will be taking the extra effort to make them a regular part of my explorations. See you there to begin a new week of big mountain magic. Stay Frosty!!!

SILKY SMOOTH

3-11-23

That fast moving front delivered a silky smooth installment that smoothed out the surfaces and left dialable consistency that was like frosting a cake with a paper knife. The Faithful were there early and ready to get after the goods. When Mineral Basin opened, it offered amazing lines wall to wall and drew the lions share of the crowd back there leaving the front side wide open and a bit more relaxed.

Kim send this great shot of the 50th Wedding celebration of our friends Ginnymarie and Greg. The room was full of folks that have shared the dream for over 40 years. Living Large!!!

Tomorrow, look for more lines to be available with more snow on the way. Expect some continuing flurries during the day, so dress for weather. There is plenty of wide open, fairly smooth lines all over the hill. There will be some residual harbor chop to contend with in some of the high traffic areas. Look for freshly prepared machine worked lines that will let you dial in your inner Ligety. See you there for the continued shred fest. IBBY!!!
